Jeffery Straker and Friends featuring Jack Semple & Annette Campagne are our 2019/2020 season opening performance on October 4th.Get your season tickets for our season so you don't miss out on any of the great performances we bring to our community. Season tickets are available at the Town of Leader Office or any arts council members.Every Wednesday this summer, we’re bringing you stories that illustrate the Arts Board’s new Strategic Directions. The third goal is to Champion the Arts.Jeffery Straker is a singer/songwriter who performs more than 100 concerts per year. At many of his shows, he acknowledges the support he has received from the Saskatchewan Arts Board. Jeffery wants everyone to know the impact of public support for the arts.Jeffery says, “When listening to your favorite song or looking at an incredible piece of art, have you ever asked yourself, ‘I wonder how long it took to make that?’ Likely not. But the answer is likely ‘a long time.’ And even if an artist has a breakthrough moment creating a song or piece of artwork fairly quickly, the countless other works they’ve taken the time to create in the past are what has led to the current one. Being an artist is a long, wonderful process.“I’ve been writing, recording, and touring my music for over a decade and have felt really lucky to have the Saskatchewan Arts Board supporting what I do. My busy touring schedule keeps me on the road performing for listeners across Canada and abroad earning an income as a full-time artist. I just returned from two rewarding weeks performing across the Netherlands. To keep doing what I do I need to continually refresh my catalogue with new songs to share with my listeners, and to keep myself fulfilled artistically. The Arts Board recognizes the importance of the ‘creative time’ that I spend locked up in a room with a piano writing new music. It’s a significant amount of time that for many can be measured in weeks or months, but of course doesn’t generate income while bills are still coming in. The Independent Artist program support I’ve received helps cover cost-of-living expenses while I’m creating, and it’s vital.“I make an effort to tell people about this public support because without it, so many musicians and artists simply wouldn’t be able to bring new work to their fans and followers. Through programs like this, the Saskatchewan Arts Board is a catalyst and a fuel that continuously ignites new creation in the province. I’m incredibly grateful that we have an organization like this helping to keep art and creativity not just alive, but thriving.” For more on the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Strategic Directions, visit www.saskartsboard.ca/stratplan ...
